IF MAVELI HAD A MOM NEAR HIM...

Onam! The name itself infuses in me a fresh lease of life. Though I enjoy myself with my friends by making ‘Pookalam’, having ‘onasadya’ and doing lot more things, a question comes to my mind: “Why did Maveli’s glorious years of reign come to an abrupt end before ‘vamanan’?
I spent lot of time thinking about this and at last I got answer from the Gospel and to be more specific from the wedding at Cana. (Jn. 2:1-13).
I am just going to draw a line of comparison between the wedding feast at Cana and the ‘Yajna’ (sacrifice) performed by Maveli so that the answer will be clearer.
The wedding feast at Cana was a grand one, a lot of people from different walks of life were invited, but the important drink, wine was given out.Having no wine to serve is equal to disrespecting the invitees. When the people were getting ready to raise their leg to send the master of that house to ‘Pathala’ (underground) of shame and humiliation, there arouse a calm voice, voice of a mom, which said, “they have no wine.”
As it was the duty of the master of that house to give wine during the wedding, it was the duty and obligation of Maveli to fulfill the desires of the invitees who came for his ‘Yajna’ (sacrifice). It was just three feet of land that ‘vamana’ had asked, but three worlds were required to place two feet and to keep his word , Maveli asked Vamana to place the third feet on his head. During this time when leg of vamana was raised to step on Maveli’s head, what was lacking here was the sound of a mom, which was heard during a similar situation in the wedding feast at Cana.
To the request of mom that there was no wine, her son transformed six jars of water into wine. If there were a mom near Maveli, he would have surely escaped from this troublesome situation.
So, it is the mom, which matters. This mom is none other than the Blessed Virgin Mary. If she is at our side there is no place for ‘Vamanas’ like worries, anxieties, sorrows, pains etc. If we go near this blessed mom she will take us to her son Jesus: “Through Mary to Jesus.”
May this Onam be a reminder to make our bond with that loving and caring blessed mom stronger and stronger.
